What if I am not the cook?

A guide to an equitable home-cooked meal

We’ve all been there. Work is everything, and food simply has to take a back seat. Very often, the job of cooking and managing the kitchen falls to the woman in the household, or is outsourced to a domestic helper.

If you are not the cook at home, you can still participate in an equitable home-cooked meal:

1. Help with groceries during lunch hour or on weekends.

Rather than saying, “Let me know if you need anything”, try asking, “There’s a supermarket on my way to the office. Can I help get any vegetables or condiments?”

2. Contribute recipes.

The mental work is often a taxing and unnoticed form of household labour. Thinking of interesting things to make every meal is no easy feat, so share your ideas!

3. Do the dishes.…

And don’t break anything.

4. Learn from your domestic helper.

Imagine eating something you are not used to, day after day. Once in a while, why not ask your helper to make something from home for everyone to share?

5. Have an open conversation about what your kitchen manager(s) need.

All time is created equal. Recognise that and value each other’s needs.
